I am really pleased to announce that one of my paintings, Spring 5 from the Fell Morning series, has been selected for the New Light Art Prize. This exciting exhibition will take place at the wonderful Bowes Museum in Barnard Castle from 18 November to 18 February 2018. As part of the programme there will also be further exhibitions for the participants at the Huddersfield Gallery, Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery in Carlisle and also at the Bankside Gallery in June.
The Fell Morning series was made over a period of a year when I followed a routine of making paintings nearly each day after early morning walks on Cockfield Fell. I would try and absorb the day's atmosphere and quickly create a painting in response to the experience. With Spring 5 I remember that around March/April time this year there was frequently a dark steel grey sky over the Fell and sometimes it would be combined with sharp sunshine that lit up the ground so that there was a sort of glow. Often it followed a heavy downpour and the sky was reflected in the rain pools.
